Thrift store treasure turn into pin cushions

If you remember I went to thrift store last week and I found a couple of treasures in my outing and I decided to turn this cute little tea set into pin cushions. I enjoy the hunt of finding that piece you see instantly and know exactly you want to do with it. I remember spending the day with my good friend and just going to three thrift stores. She was in the hunt for a dresser and at the time I was just a long for the ride.

We had a blast going around and looking at all the furniture at the different stores and comparing prices. Not once did I think I was going to buy anything. We were especially thrilled to be going on an outing for ourselves. We usually have to bring out little kiddos with us but this time around this was a child free outing. We love being moms but at times we forget who we are as individual when our children are not around.
I am lucky that my hubby lets me escape from my daily routine during the weekend for a couple of hours to recharge and I can’t image a better way than to go thrift shopping and in this particular outing I found this cute little tea set. The little legs are damage but I always try to see the potential. I will be placing this cuties on my etsy shop opening soon. So keep an eye out.
What will you repurpose today?

Learning Calligraphy

I am the first to tell you that my handwriting is not the best. My hubby always has difficulties reading my grocery list. So I decided that this year I wanted to give a couple of new hobbies a try, like I don’t have plenty already, hehe. The first thing that came to mind was calligraphy. I have always been interested in calligraphy but never really had the opportunity to try it until recently when a workshop came up near me. I was so excited and I am so glad that I took the leap. Its so much fun learning it, I was scared at the beginning because I am left handed and its always a challenge doing something but I never really let it hold me back or think about it really.
I was excited to learn that my teach was left handed and she did beautiful calligraphy very easily so I knew with much practice I can be good as well.  Hopefully by the end of the year I will better handwriting.  We learn a very flowing and not so structured calligraphy which is fun for Valentines’s day.

Here are some of the beautiful things I was in class.
Some of the girls I got to share this journey in calligraphy.

Our wonderful teachers!

What new hobby will you try?

Burlap Valentine’s Day Wreath

You would think that I would be tired of using burlap but it rustic chic and I love using it. I especially like using it on my wreaths not such on my pillows because they are a little itchy at times.  Since Valentine’s day is around the corner its time to update my wreath. I reused my beach wreath from last year and covered it with burlap instead of using the yarn that was on it.

I also got a cute little heart wreath from Joann’s.

I took three heart apart and covered them with festive berry glitter. The three heart stand for the three love of my life!

I love how the glitter makes the hearts stand out more.

How can you have heart and no arrow. I made an arrow out of piece of pipe that my hubby uses on his clay sculptures. I used white foam covered with white glitter on the tip of the arrow.

I used hot glue to attach the heart and the arrow.

How to make a stencil with cameo silhouette on a wood sign

When I was browsing Joann’s I found these cute wooden hearts that I just needed to have. The problem was that I bought about 4 of these hearts and no plan. I promised myself this year that I would only buy something that I was going to use right away. So far I have not been doing to well with that little goal and I decided to start working on it a little harder.
I decided to make a cute little wooden heart sign with my cameo silhouette. I wanted the sign to show little age and not be perfect. I like adding a little rustic charm to my walls.

The project won’t take that long and I like the look on my wall. The first thing I did to the wooden heart was stain it. I used a dark mahogany stain.

The wood picked up the stain fast and I wiped off some of it.

I then went to work on my cameo silhouette. I purchased the love you forever lettering from the silhouette store.

I then attached the vinyl lettering to the wood heart and then used acrylic paint over it.

Then you take off the vinyl lettering once the paint is slightly dry and now you have a nice rustic heart wood sign. Some of the paint went behind the lettering and looks like a mistake which I really like. Not everything beautiful has to be perfect.

Book Folding Origami Pyramid Fold

Book folding Origami can be very consuming at times and this one was one of them. I spend about two weeks doing this book folding. At times I start with a larger book with 700 pages because it look more pretty when the pages are condensed together but this time 400 pages was just enough. It still took for ever but it was worth it.

You are going to fold 15 point slightly about each other to make this book folding. You will begin the folds from the bottom up.  Once you reach the center of the book you will start folding from the top down. This way you have the centered effect.
I like the center of the book, how it draws your eye to it. However, I wish I could had made the folds of the pages on the right hand side face the opposite way then again that is how you learn.
Let me know how you guys do!

How to make hot air balloons with coffee filters

My task this week was to make something different from my solar system from FloraCraft Make: It Fun.  It was not easy let me tell you because I really wanted to make the solar system and my son loved playing with the foam balls but boys get easily entertained with anything that can be thrown. hehe.
I decided to make cute little hot air balloons with the FloraCraft Make: If Fun foam.

So I grabbed the solar system, mini planters, coffee filter, yarn and paint.

I went to work attaching the filters to the foam. I used hot glue and I have to say its was not as easy as it looks. I burn my finger quite a few times, so be careful.
My son had a blast painting the pots with me and helped a little gluing the filters to the foam balls when he was not throwing them around the room.
Once the pots were dried I glued yarn to the inside. I wanted to use Krazy glue but the hubby took them all to work so hot glue was the only thing I had at hand this time around. However hot glue did work very well but again I did burn my finger, blah!

I used little screws to attach the top of the yarn to the foam. Screws and foam work very well together. I used the three biggest planets to make these cute hot air balloons with coffee filters and foam balls!

I am so in love with them!

Making your own Book Lamp

I fell love with a beautiful book lamp I saw on pinterest but their was no tutorial for it. So I decided to jump into making my very own. Especialy now that I need more light in our home. I could always use a lamp in every room. If you have a couple of old book you don’t mind drilling into and lamp kit you can make one too.

***
Please be aware that I am not an electrician by any means and you should always read the instruction when using electrical wires. Trust me on this I had a bad experience and I was very lucky. So please do  your research.
***

I got a lamp kit and lampholder which I remove the guts and replaced it with the lamp kit.

Place this inside the lampholder.

Then it time to drill! I drilled a big enough hole for the cord fit in.

Once the cord was in I cut some of the pages so the cord could lay flat in the book and for the book to lay flat as well. I wanted the cord to come out the side of the book than through other side.

I went ahead and screwed the books together.

Follow the instruction on how to wire the lamp kit and now you have your every own book lamp for anytime you need that extra bit of light. You can place it next to your favorite reading chair for that night time reading. I also use a 40w Edison light bulb that I got over at home depot.

How to cover a picture frame with fabric and mod podge

I like adding to cute little family touches to my home decor and this time I made a cute little picture frame with my little princess foot print. The cut it out frames perfect picture frames because I don’t have to go around looking for something to fit my decor when I can just paint it any color I want. I decided to cover it with fabric and painting it.

The first thing I did was grab my material. I picked a cute sparkle gold fabric for my little princess.

Then I cut a piece of fabric and applied mod podge on the frame and placed the fabric.

I cut any extra fabric off and glue to the edges. I used black acrylic paint on the edges to cover the fabric

I added a flower with leaves for that extra touch, now I have a cute little fabric covered frame with my little girls foot print.

How to seal wood

I little while back I did a cute little video on how to seal wood. If you have wood decor in your home its always a good idea to seal it because I know that in my home due to the weather it goes from hot to cold from one day to the next. The wood will dry out and crack and we don’t want that, right?
Now don’t make to much fun of my video, it has been a while since I’ve done a video and its not really good but it will shows you what I do to seal my wood decor in my home!

Let me know what you think!
